Conversations in Salt Lake City

In February, I traveled to Salt Lake City for a work conference. While in the city, I took time to visit the grounds of the Salt Lake Temple, a central site of worship for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During my visit, I walked around the temple grounds on a couple of occasions and had the opportunity to speak with three different pairs of LDS missionaries.

First Conversation: Listening and Learning

In my first conversation, I quickly realized that I was not as familiar with LDS beliefs as I would have liked to be. Rather than attempting to challenge their views without a solid understanding, I chose to ask questions and listen carefully.

Some of the key questions I asked included:

  • What is considered Holy Scripture?
  • What does salvation mean in your faith?
  • How do works relate to faith?

This conversation became an opportunity to better understand their perspective and approach future discussions more thoughtfully.

Studying and Preparing

Afterward, I spent time reviewing portions of the book of mormon and learning more about LDS beliefs. This helped me prepare for deeper and more informed conversations.

Second Conversation: A Surprising Response

In a later conversation, I asked about passages in the book of mormon that state salvation comes through both works and grace. Interestingly, the responses I received sounded more aligned with biblical teaching than I expected based on my prior reading of the book of mormon.

This stood out to me and served as a reminder of the importance of clear understanding, careful listening, and dialogue.

A Call to Prayer

These interactions left a lasting impression on me. I invite you to join me in praying for these missionaries—that they would continue to seek the truth and come to know the true Jesus Christ.

9/27 Pride Fest Evangelizing

Today I went to Virginia pride fest at the bon secour training facility with three guys from church. Before going to the event we met for coffee before hand to ask questions, read scripture, verify salvation, verify no footholds for the enemy, and pray. This was a good time asking questions and preparing for the event. Once we finished at the coffee shop we headed to the event. On the way to the event we split into pairs, two groups of two. It was a large venue, they were expecting 40,000+ people but with the rain but with the rain it was a fraction of that. At pride fest there were food trucks, concert stage, and vendor booths. 8/8 Jehovahs Witness Knocks on my Door

  Some Jehovah’s Witness came by my house today and gave me an invite to their upcoming convention, it is an invitation to JW events. I talked with them about Jesus’ deity. I was searching my mind for the deity versus, I am glad I have been working on memorizing them recently. Matthew 12:8, Mark 14:62, John 8:58, John 10:30. I’ll be honest I could’ve been more put together, the knock on the door mid work day threw me off. I did get the guys phone number and planning to reconnect next week.   Afterwards talking with others more scripture was brought up John 14:9, Daniel 7, John 1:1, Phil 2:4, Isiah 6 and 10. When I stepped outside to talk with them I did not have a bible on me, so when we looked at verses it was through the JW app on her phone. So I believe we were looking at the NWT, next time bring out my own bible. I usually use NIV or ESV, but KJV could be a common ground they would listen to (initial research I’ve done). Statement of Faith

  The Holy Bible, and only the Bible, is the authoritative Word of God. There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. These three are coequal and co-eternal. Jesus Christ is God the Son, the second person of the Trinity. On earth, Jesus was 100% God and 100% man. He is the only man ever to have lived a sinless life. He was born of a virgin, performed miracles, died on the cross for mankind, and thus atoned for our sins through the shedding of His blood. He rose from the dead on the third day according to the Scriptures, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and will return again in power and glory. We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ: His death, burial, and resurrection. Salvation is a gift from God, not a result of our good works or of any human efforts.
